Students, Teachers, Books and Masks?

August 27, 2020

As I am writing this, school is beginning on Monday, August 31, 2020 in Charlotte County.

Here at United Way of Charlotte County, we are thinking of our students, teachers, parents and all of you that are doing so much to continue to keep everyone safe and healthy. We know that our children our resilient and they will be fine. A teacher friend of mine recently commented on social media, "This will be an interesting and memorable year with heaps of learning and growing for everyone!"

We have been mobilizing volunteers to deliver masks to schools to keep our children safe this school year. Our community donated almost 5,000 masks to Charlotte County Public Schools. Some of them were ordered or purchased online, but many of them were handmade by several community members.  These masks are beautiful, thoughtful and such a gift. There are families in our schools that just don't have resources for extra's and even purchasing masks for their children is a stressor.

How many times will you hear:

I left my mask at home... in the car.. at McDonald's... at grandma's house.

I dropped my mask... in the parking lot... in the hallway... in the toilet

And the classic... my dog ate it!

So to say the least, a huge heartfelt thank you to all those that contributed!

Books!

Ten pallets of books have been donated and UWCC is mobilizing volunteers to distribute those books to students! Our Partner Agencies will be picking them up and helping us get them in the hands of our children.  We are so proud to be able to assist our schools in this way.

Once we get under way and school begins, we anticipate some challenges. We can do this. Please know that your local United Way is here to serve and mobilize. If you have a need, or have some ideas on how we can help please reach out to us at 941-627-3539 or email our office.
