A Legacy of Light, Service, and Heart

By Angie Matthiessen, Chief Executive Officer - United Way Charlotte County

As we celebrate Dawn Forlini’s retirement from our organization, it is hard to fully capture the impact she has had on this organization, this community, and on me personally. While this moment marks the close of an important chapter, it also gives us the opportunity to reflect on the legacy she leaves behind—one defined by service, faith, and deep care for others.

For nearly nine years, Dawn has been my right hand—my partner in the day-to-day, sounding board, and a steady, trusted presence through every season. From the very beginning, we were in it together. I still remember one of our first big projects—filming the epically challenging Game Changer video with close to seventy-five community partners at the Charlotte County Sports Park.

Just two months after she joined the team, I stepped into the Executive Director role. What followed were years that required constant pivoting, and Dawn mastered it. No matter what was needed—no matter how unexpected—she found a way forward. She carried more than her share, often quietly, always effectively.

In that first year, one of the hardest seasons of my life, when I lost both of my parents, Dawn was there. She became a steady presence, someone who would listen, support, and help me keep moving forward. What I remember most from all these years is her servant’s heart. Her focus has never been on herself, but on helping others perform better and see more clearly.

Her willingness to be honest—for the sake of helping someone grow—is a gift I will always be grateful for. I would not be the leader I am today without her influence, her care, and her investment in me.

Those who have worked alongside Dawn describe her as bubbly, sunshiny, and full of laughter—and it’s true. Her joy is contagious. But what makes her truly special is the depth behind that joy. She is thoughtful, intentional, and has a remarkable ability to anticipate what others need and meet them there, often before they even realize it themselves.

Extending far beyond our office, Dawn has a deep heart for this community and for the mission of United Way. She is incredibly kind and supportive, always wanting others to thrive. She welcomes people in with open arms, helping them connect to something bigger than themselves. She doesn’t just represent the mission—she lives it.

Her faith is evident in all she does. There is a Christlike quality in the way she loves others—quiet, consistent, and sincere.

Dawn has also modeled what it means to live with intention—prioritizing her faith, her family, and the things that matter most. Her marriage is a beautiful example of love and commitment, and her life reflects a balance that many of us aspire to.

Dawn, thank you. Thank you for your partnership, your strength, your honesty, and your heart. Thank you for making all of us better.

Your impact will not be forgotten. You leave behind a legacy of service, love, and leadership that will continue to shape this organization for years to come.

You will be deeply missed, and gratefully celebrated.
