How VITA volunteers are making a lasting difference, one return at a time
By Angie Matthiessen, Chief Executive Officer
One of the things that stays with me each Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) season isn’t a number or a final report, it’s the moment someone realizes what their refund means for their family. There’s often a pause, a sense of relief, and sometimes even emotion. In that moment, it becomes very clear that this work is about so much more than taxes.
As another VITA season comes to a close, it is worth pausing to reflect on what this program truly represents in our community. While the numbers tell part of the story, the heart of VITA is found in the people, both those who walk through the doors seeking support and those who show up, week after week, to serve.
This year, through the dedication of 34 volunteers, we were able to prepare approximately 1,196 returns, helping bring back more than $1.1million to individuals and families across our community. For many, these refunds are not extras, they are essential. They help cover rent, catch up on bills, repair vehicles, and create a bit of breathing room where it is often hard to find.
Programs like VITA are especially impactful for ALICE households, those who are working, contributing, and doing their best to make ends meet, yet still facing daily financial strain. Access to free, trusted tax preparation ensures they can claim the credits they’ve earned without the burden of costly fees.
But these outcomes don’t happen on their own. They happen because of volunteers.
Each return filed represents time given freely. Individuals who choose to become IRS Certified, sit across from neighbors they may not know, and offer not just a service, but patience, respect, and care. From schedulers to greeters, and tax preparers, every role plays a part in creating an experience that is welcoming and dignified.
Quite simply, this program does not exist without them.
To every volunteer who gave their time this season, whether it was one shift or many, roughly 2,796 hours, thank you. Your commitment makes a tangible difference, and the impact reaches far beyond what can be measured in dollars.
As we look ahead to next year, we know the need will continue. And with that, so will the opportunity.
If you have ever considered volunteering, VITA is a meaningful way to get involved. Training is provided, roles vary based on your comfort level, and you become part of a team working directly to strengthen financial stability in our community.
It is work that matters. And it is work that anyone, with the right support, can be part of.
For now, we celebrate a successful season, one built on generosity, connection, and impact. And we carry that momentum forward, knowing what is possible when people come together to support one another.
