A Celebration of Community
By Angie Matthiessen, Chief Executive Officer – United Way Charlotte County
With Thanksgiving and the holiday season just ahead, it’s easy to feel like things are about to move too fast. I don’t know about you, but by the time Giving Tuesday rolls around, I’m craving something quieter, something that reminds me why this season matters. That’s what Giving Tuesday offers: a gentle reminder to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the heart of the holidays. It’s not about spending, it’s about sharing. And this year, we’re celebrating it in a way that’s all about togetherness.
Founded in 2012 as a simple idea with a powerful purpose, Giving Tuesday is now a global movement that inspires millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. It’s held each year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and it serves as a reminder that the holiday season isn’t just about consumption—it’s also about compassion.
But giving doesn’t always mean money. It can be time, talent, kindness, or advocacy. It’s about showing up for others in meaningful ways—whether that’s helping a neighbor, supporting a local cause, or simply spreading joy. The beauty of Giving Tuesday is that it belongs to everyone. There’s no right or wrong way to participate, and every act of generosity counts.
This year, United Way Charlotte County (UWCC) is turning up the heat—and the hospitality—for Giving Tuesday! Forget the usual asks and join us for a flavorful celebration at BBQ for a Cause. On Tuesday, December 2, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, swing by for a delicious BBQ lunch lovingly prepared by our own UWCC Board Member, Alfred Current, Wampler Varner Insurance Group. He’ll be serving up his famous North Carolina-style, hand-chopped, hickory-smoked pork BBQ with all the fixings.
It’s an open house-style gathering where guests can come and go, meet our team, and tour the office. Ask questions, visit with friends, dine in or take out—reservations are requested but not required—and there’s a suggested gift of $20 per person to support the cause. Every plate supports UWCC programs that help local families thrive. There will be no formal speeches or announcements—just a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and a smokin’ good lunch that gives back to our community.
So how can you take part in Giving Tuesday? It doesn’t have to be big to be meaningful. Treat your team, co-workers or a group to lunch. Buy an extra meal and share it with someone who could use a lift. Small gestures can spark big change. Eat Good. Do Good. Feel Good. That’s our motto for this Giving Tuesday. Whether you’re a longtime supporter or just learning about our mission, we welcome you to be part of something special. Your presence matters. Your participation matters. And together, we can make Giving Tuesday not just a day on the calendar, but a way of life.
Don’t wait—mark your calendar, grab a friend, and reserve your spot for BBQ for a Cause! Let’s turn a simple lunch into a powerful act of community care—one plate, one person, one purpose at a time.
