Building a Stronger, Inclusive Community
By Angie Matthiessen, Executive Director
There’s something incredibly powerful about being part of a community that truly cares. At United Way Charlotte County (UWCC), I see it every day—in the smiles of volunteers, the determination of women stepping into leadership roles, and the quiet strength of those working hard to build a better life for their families. Being part of this mission-driven community has shown me just how deeply connection and compassion can impact lives—including my own.
Through our focused initiatives, we reach those who need us most—creating connections, offering support, and making a difference in ways we never imagined.
We are grateful to be a grant recipient of the Miriam P. Raines Charitable Fund at the Gulf Coast Community Foundation. This generous support helps UWCC engage women, both those already involved and newcomers, by connecting them to opportunities where they can share, mentor, and grow together. We strive to remove barriers that might prevent participation—such as childcare, transportation, or event costs—so every woman can fully engage and thrive.
Both ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) women and community volunteers represent populations in Charlotte County in need of deeper connection and meaningful social engagement. Fostering these relationships is a priority for UWCC, as stronger social ties contribute to personal growth, community involvement, and long-term resilience.
To support this, micro leadership opportunities will be introduced, allowing ALICE women to step into visible, empowering roles at their own pace. Participant-led programs are designed to ensure their voices are not only heard but activated, helping to build a stronger, more connected, and inclusive community.
We also carefully engage our volunteers—many of whom are women—by identifying gaps in inclusivity and creating socially enriching opportunities for all. Through increased outreach, tailored support, and events like Women United, our program strengthens connections among ALICE families, Parent Advisory Council members, and volunteers. By promoting belonging, collaboration, and shared leadership across diverse backgrounds, we are building a more connected and resilient community—one where everyone has the chance to contribute, grow, and succeed.
As Stephanie Lucy, UWCC Program & Grants Manager put it, “We grow this work by talking about it with everyone, sharing everything that we do, and always inviting people to join us.” This spirit of openness and inclusion is what drives our mission forward—creating space for more women to lead, connect, and thrive.
