The Wreath Showdown

By Angie Matthiessen, Chief Executive Officer

Something feels different this year. For me, the holiday season enters like a breath of fresh air. The moments of reflection begin in earnest and frankly the holiday tunes are already playing in my earbuds.

For many, the moment we are in calls for magic, lights, music, and the sense of togetherness that fills the air. In the United Way Charlotte County (UWCC) office, things are abuzz with one event after another, it seems.

Excitement for our 4th annual Festival of Wreaths kicks into high gear when the donated wreaths start arriving. The office staff and visitors admire each one. This event has truly become one of our favorites for infusing holiday cheer.

Last year, our team curled up in pajamas, sharing pizza and laughter while watching a holiday comedy called Festival of Trees on Prime Video. Yes, it was cheesy—and we loved it. The movie followed a romance and a spirited competition for the best decorated tree. It was heartwarming and funny (slightly predictable). But what struck us most was its message: children fighting cancer at a children's hospital and how simple stories can take you right to the heart of Christmas.

I worked at that children’s hospital for many years and at Christmas I longed to be there because in those moments all of it made sense. We are meant to be present, to bring joy to others, especially those who are having a hard time. It feels like we need that now more than ever. That’s why every year we hold the Festival of Wreaths, it feels right.

If you’re looking for a way to kick off the holiday season with heart, inspiration, and laughter, look no further than Festival of Wreaths. This festive evening is more than just a celebration—it’s a chance to make a difference. The stories we hear every day in our office are real and differences are being made. We can’t stop and so this event becomes twofold – bring joy and raise funds to help those who need it most.

Join us for a holiday celebration like no other! We’re excited to welcome you to A Vermont Touch Florist and Events, a stunning new venue that radiates the elegance and warmth of the season. Gather with friends, stroll through beautifully crafted wreaths, and savor delicious bites courtesy of AdventHealth Port Charlotte.

Each wreath is a unique creation donated by local businesses, organizations, and individuals, and they’ll be featured in raffles and a silent auction. Proceeds support United Way Charlotte County’s mission.

There are so many ways to be part of the magic. You can donate a new or handmade wreath, attend the event and bid on a wreath you love, or join the excitement of our newest addition, the Corporate Wreath Competition. Six amazing local businesses are showcasing their creativity: Adams Group, Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity, Lake Michigan Credit Union, Port Charlotte Rehabilitation Center, Realtors of Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, North Port and Desoto, and Whitco Insurance Alexia Martin Agency. Help us crown the 2025 Wreath Royalty Champion! It’s a fun way to celebrate community spirit while supporting a great cause. Cast your vote online at our website, or Facebook page, or stop by a participating business.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 10, and join us for an evening that promises to be meaningful and unforgettable. Together, we can turn holiday cheer into lasting change for our community. Let’s make this holiday season brighter—for everyone. For tickets, voting, donating and more information, visit unitedwayccfl.org/2025Wreath.
