A Bold New Tradition Begins in Charlotte County
By Angie Matthiessen, Executive Director
When Kristen Szych joined United Way Charlotte County two years ago as our Development Director, I knew she would bring creativity and fresh energy to our work — but I couldn’t have predicted just how quickly her vision would begin to spark something special. Not long after she came on board, the Women United Council was formed: a passionate, determined group of women eager to connect more deeply with one another and drive meaningful change in Charlotte County. That’s when everything started to shift — and you could feel the excitement building.
Now, we’re thrilled to introduce the very first Power of the Purse, a new signature fundraiser hosted by Women United of United Way Charlotte County, taking place on Saturday, November 15 from 11:30-2:30PM at Visani Comedy Club in Port Charlotte. This lively, purpose-driven event will bring together women from across the community for an afternoon of designer purse auctions, raffles, handsome heroes, delicious food and most importantly philanthropy.
Power of the Purse is more than a fun event — it’s a statement. It marks the beginning of what will become an annual signature fundraiser, joining a powerful tradition already embraced by Women United groups nationwide. United Way’s have hosted Power of the Purse for years, using it as a platform to elevate their work and amplify their impact. Now, it’s Charlotte County’s turn. but Power of the Purse is our opportunity to welcome the entire community to join us in our mission.
This shift also reflects an evolution in how Women United engages with the community. Beginning in 2026, the well-loved Women United Lunch will become an exclusive, members-only celebration. That event will focus on honoring the Woman of Courage and Woman of Distinction and will include the exciting reveal of Women United’s upcoming events for the year. It’s a chance for our members to celebrate their impact and stay connected to the mission in meaningful ways.
If you're not yet part of the Women United flock, we invite you to join us. Membership is open to all women who want to invest their time, talents, and resources to uplift others and drive positive change right here in Charlotte County. Joining Women United is about more than attending events — it’s about stepping into a network of like-minded women committed to making a difference.
We’re grateful to the early Power of the Purse sponsors who have already stepped up in support of this inaugural event: Fifth Third Bank, WrightWay Emergency Services, Cruise Planners – Julie Lang, and Sunny Day Gift Designs. To make Power of the Purse truly soar, we’re actively seeking additional sponsors. Sponsorships come with great visibility and the opportunity to align your business with a cause that matters.
And of course, tickets are on sale now — and they’re going fast. We fully expect this event to sell out, so don’t wait to secure your seat. Whether you come to support the cause, enjoy a day with friends, or leave with a fabulous handbag, your presence helps make a lasting difference.
