Be Part of VITA's Impact
By Angie Matthiessen, Executive Director
Tax season isn’t something most people look forward to. But as we begin our 12th year of offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Charlotte County, I can honestly say it’s one of the most remarkable efforts I’ve had the privilege to witness. Year after year, I’ve seen how a group of compassionate volunteers turns what can be a stressful, overwhelming time into a season of relief and empowerment for our neighbors. For families living paycheck to paycheck, the cost of tax preparation can mean the difference between paying for rent or going without groceries.
That’s why the VITA exists. The program offers free, high-quality tax preparation to individuals and families with low to moderate income, people with disabilities, and even those with limited English proficiency. Here in Charlotte County, the need is great — and so is the opportunity for volunteers to make a difference.
VITA doesn’t just help with paperwork. It helps families hold on to their hard-earned money and access every credit they deserve, like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit. These refunds can be game changers for families living on tight budgets.
The numbers tell the story. While the county’s median household income is approximately $72,868, families served by VITA report an average adjusted gross income of just $27,420. These are our neighbors — working hard, raising children, and often struggling to make ends meet. Every dollar counts, and VITA ensures they keep more of what they’ve earned.
VITA is powered by community volunteers who receive IRS-certified training. Some prepare returns, others greet clients, assist with intake, or provide translation support. Every role is important.
Volunteers often describe the experience as one of the most rewarding things they’ve ever done. Imagine sitting across from a parent who just learned they’ll receive a refund big enough to catch up on rent or pay down a utility bill. Imagine the relief in their eyes when they realize someone is in their corner, helping them navigate a stressful process. That’s what VITA gives to families — and what volunteering gives back to you.
Every year, VITA brings hundreds of thousands of dollars in refunds back into Charlotte County. This isn’t just about financial stability for individual households — it’s about strengthening the entire community. Those dollars are spent in local businesses, on housing, food, and transportation. The ripple effect is real.
But none of it happens without volunteers. When you volunteer with VITA, you are directly fueling economic stability, family resilience, and community growth.
If you’ve been looking for a way to give back, this is it. Training is provided, support is always available, and the impact is immediate. Whether you’re retired and want to use your skills in a new way, a student building experience for your career, or a community member who simply wants to help, there’s a place for you in VITA.
Tax season is inevitable. The question is, will you be part of the team that makes it less stressful — and far more hopeful — for families in our community? Every return filed is more than numbers on a page. It’s a neighbor supported, a family strengthened, and a community lifted.
