How a Day of Celebration Helped Invest in Charlotte County's children
By Angie Matthiessen, Chief Executive Officer
One of my favorite parts of any community celebration isn't the fireworks or the entertainment—it's the moments that often go unnoticed. A child's carefree laughter, parents reconnecting while their kids make new friends, volunteers giving their time to create something special for families they've never met. Those simple moments are a powerful reminder that the true strength of Charlotte County has always been its people.
Saturday’s Fourth Fest in Punta Gorda was a perfect reminder of that.
As our nation begins celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, families from across Charlotte County gathered to enjoy an afternoon filled with laughter, patriotism, and time together.
While fireworks may have been the grand finale, some of the biggest smiles could be found in the United Way Charlotte County Children’s Play Zone. Families purchased wristbands to enjoy the attractions, and every contribution will directly support United Way Charlotte County Children's Enrichment Fund, providing scholarships for local children to participate in extracurricular activities like sports, dance, cheer, music, art, 4-H, karate, and so much more. Every child deserves the opportunity to discover their talents, build confidence, and find a place where they belong.
We were honored to be invited to bring the play area to life, and thanks to more than 30 incredible volunteers, hundreds of children spent the day bouncing, racing down water slides, getting soaked in the foam-spraying car wash, playing games, and simply enjoying the carefree moments that childhood should be filled with.
Watching parents laugh alongside their children, grandparents cheering them on, and friends making memories together reminded us that community is built one moment at a time.
Events like Fourth Fest also remind us of something we see every day at United Way: when our community comes together, amazing things happen. Whether it's helping families in crisis, supporting children, assisting seniors, or creating opportunities for people to thrive, none of our work happens alone. It happens because volunteers give their time, sponsors give their resources, and neighbors choose to invest in one another. That spirit is what makes Charlotte County so special.
Thanks to our generous sponsors and the hundreds of families who purchased wristbands throughout the day, moments of fun were transformed into opportunities for local children. All contributions raised will help provide scholarships through United Way of Charlotte County's Children's Enrichment Fund, giving more children the chance to participate in activities that help them build confidence, discover new talents, and reach their full potential.
As we celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary, I'm reminded that the strength of our country has always begun in communities like ours—where neighbors step forward, volunteers give generously, and people invest in one another. Fourth Fest was a wonderful example of those values in action, proving that our greatest strength isn't found in the fireworks, but in the people who choose to make a difference.
If you've ever wondered how you can make a difference, there's no better time than now. Whether you volunteer at an event, become a sponsor, make a donation, or support programs like the Children's Enrichment Fund, every act of generosity helps create brighter futures for local children and strengthens the community we all call home.
