Through April 12, volunteers in partnership with United Way of Charlotte County (UWCC) and SunTrust Bank will assist local residents who earned less than $66,000 in 2017 with income tax return preparation. An exciting development for tax year 2017 is the expansion from two to three tax preparation sites. This year preparers will be available in Englewood, Port Charlotte and in Punta Gorda.
SunTrust Bank’s Southwest Florida Regional President Steve Vito, a United Way board member has spearheaded the program since its inception four years ago. Last year $343,751 was refunded and our volunteer tax preparers completed 352 returns.
“Steve has done such an extraordinary job building the VITA program that our small staff is strained by the number of phone calls we receive,” explains Angie Matthiessen, UWCC’s Executive Director. “Currently, we welcome volunteers for as many hours as they can provide to answer phones and set up appointments. It’s an opportunity to help others and make a positive difference in our community.”
The IRS-endorsed VITA program helps individuals and families take advantage of all tax credits for which they are eligible, including the earned income tax credit, child tax credits and education credits. While this program assists lower income residents with tax preparation, another benefit is the increased discretionary household dollars in the form of income tax refunds and eliminated tax preparation fees available to support household savings programs and the purchasing of goods and services here in Charlotte County.
